Renowned Islamic scholar and leader of the Darqawi-Shadhili-Qadiri Tariqa, Sheikh Dr Abdalqadir as-Sufi, passed away in the early hours of Sunday in South Africa.
Born Ian Dallas in Scotland in 1930, Dr Abdalqadir as-Sufi converted to Islam in 1967 with the Imam of the Qarawiyyin Mosque in Fez, Morocco. Before his conversion to Islam, he had acted in Federico Fellini’s Oscar-winning film 8½.
Dr Abdalqadir dedicated many years of his life to dawah (propagation of Islam) founding mosques in England, Spain and South Africa.
He authored well over 20 books, as well as many essays and articles, covering various topics. He initiated the translation and publication of translations of the Qur’an into various languages, as well as numerous classical works of Islam, including the Muwatta of Imam Malik and Ash-Shifa of Qadi ‘Iyad.
His most notable has been his call for the proper implementation of zakat, a return to just forms of trade, the revival of Imam Malik’s legal school and his emphasis on correct and coherent community and family dynamics.
