Islamic Scholar And Former Ameer Of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Jalaluddin Umri Passes Away

Renowned Islamic scholar and former Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Maulana Jalaluddin Umri passed away on Friday. He breathed his last at Al Shifa Hospital in New Delhi at around 8.30 pm.

Born in 1935 in Tamil Nadu’s Puttagram village, Maulana Jalaluddin Umri graduated in Islamic sciences from Jamia Darussalam in Oomerabad, Tamil Nadu. Jamia Darussalam awarded him a master’s degree in Islamic studies. Aligarh Muslim University also awarded him a bachelor’s degree in English literature.

While still a student, Jalaluddin Umri became associated with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. He committed himself to the organization’s research section after finishing his studies. In 1956, he joined it formally. He was the weekly Zindagi-e-Nau’s editor for five years as well as the city Ameer of Aligarh’s Jama’at for ten years. Later, he was chosen by the Jama’at to serve as its All-India deputy ameer, a position he held for four consecutive terms. He was chosen as the Jama’at’s Ameer in 2007 by the Central Council of Representatives. In 2011, he was chosen to serve as Jama’at’s Ameer once more.

For a fourth term, Jalaluddin Umri has been chosen to serve as Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

He also served as the vice-president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) from 2011 – 2019.

Maulana Jalaluddin Umari was a towering leader of Indian Muslims, renowned author and famous speaker.

Some of his well-known books are Maroof wa Munkar, Islam ki Dawat, Musalman Aurat ke Huquuq aur Un par aeterazaat ka Jaiza, SeHat-o-marz aur Islam ki Taleemat, Islam meN khidmat-e-khalq ka Tasawwur, State of Our Community and Nation and Our Responsibilities among others.
