According to the most recent data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 4,28,278 cases of crime against women in 2021 compared to 3,71,503 cases in 2020, a 15.3% increase.
According to the NCRB study, the number of crimes against women grew from 56.5% in 2020 to 64.5% in 2021, or occurrences per 1 lakh people. The majority of these situations (31.8%) fall under the category of “Cruelty by husband or his relatives’’, followed by “Assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty” (20.8 per cent), kidnapping and abduction (17.6 per cent), and rape (7.4 per cent).
Despite a slight decline over the previous three years, Assam had the highest rate of crime against women in 2021 (1683.0%), according to the research. Over 29,000 such cases were reported to the authorities last year.
Two minor girls were raped every day in 2021 in the national capital, which was the most unsafe metropolitan city for women across the country, according to the latest report of NCRB.
The national capital has also reported the highest number of cases of crimes against women in the categories related to kidnapping (3948), cruelty by husbands (4674) and girl child rapes (833) as compared to other metropolitan cities with over two million population in 2021.
The cases of crimes against women in Delhi accounted for 32.20 percent of total crimes in the category among all 19 metropolitan cities.
Delhi was followed by the financial capital Mumbai, which saw 5,543 such instances, and Bengaluru with 3,127 cases. Mumbai and Bengaluru accounted for 12.76 per cent and 7.2 per cent of total crimes in 19 cities, respectively.
