Hyderabad’s karate champion Syeda Falak has been selected to represent India in the upcoming Commonwealth Karate Championships, which will take place from September 7 to 11 in Birmingham, England.
The champion will compete in the 68 kg senior female Kumite category. From Telangana, Falak is the first from the state to represent India at the world and Asian karate championship tournaments.
Falak, who is currently pursuing an LLB from Sultan Ul Uloom College is also a member of the All Indian Majlis-e- Ittihad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party. With 20 national and 22 international championships so far, she is also known as the “golden girl” of Hyderabad.
Falak said she was introduced to Karate by her elder sister. “Initially it was just about learning self-defence and enhancing fitness,” she told Siasat.com, “When I told my parents that I want to take it up as a profession, they were apprehensive about it. However, my elder sister convinced them, which helped me get started.”
The national and international winner’s journey as a Karate player began in 2006 when she bagged a silver medal in an inter-school competition.
Speaking about her future goals Falak stated she likes to go with the flow and continue with Karate for as long as possible. She also wants to start an academy exclusively for women, with an emphasis on self-defence.
About her political aspirations, Falak said that it is currently very difficult for her to fully concentrate on politics. She is however, “trying to use this opportunity to understand the challenges of the people and to provide viable solutions.”
