Haji Shakeel Ahmad (born 1950) is an Islamic daee, scholar, mentor and philanthropist known for his contributions in the field of Islamic dawah and spirituality. He is particularly recognized for his involvement in the Tabligh Jamaat movement and his establishment of numerous educational institutions in remote areas of India.
Early Life and Education
Haji Shakeel Ahmad was born in 1950 in a small village in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. After completing his matriculation, he migrated to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1967 in pursuit of further studies. However, his plans took an unexpected turn when his maternal uncle urged him to join the family business. Despite his initial reluctance, Shakeel Ahmad accepted the offer and quickly assumed responsibilities at Muhammad Haji Saboo Siddique MusafirKhana, located in the bustling Crawford Market area of Bombay.
Over time, Shakeel Ahmad’s dedication and business acumen propelled him to the forefront of his uncle’s enterprise. Eventually, he expanded the business to include the trading of ladies’ nightwear and ventured into the field of interior decoration. Today, Haji Shakeel Ahmad is recognized as a reputable builder in Panvel, a city in the New Bombay region.
Involvement in Tabligh and Spiritual Journey
In 1970, Shakeel Ahmad embarked on a spiritual path by actively participating in the Tabligh Jamaat, a global Islamic missionary movement that emphasizes the spread of religious teachings and moral reform. Two years later, he had a transformative encounter with Hazrat Maulana Abdul Haleem Jaunpuri, a prominent spiritual leader, and performed baite-tauba, a ritualistic act symbolizing repentance and commitment to a devout life.
In 1976, Shakeel Ahmad assumed the responsibility of a Maktab (Islamic school) located in Santacruz, a suburb of Bombay. This role allowed him to contribute to the education and upbringing of young Muslims in the community. Currently, he oversees approximately 140 Maktabs, with many situated in remote regions and even hilly forests of Himachal Pradesh. His efforts in promoting education in underserved areas have garnered him recognition as a dedicated supporter of Tabligh and a renowned scholar.
Silsila
Haji Shakeel Ahmad has attained authorization, or Ijaazah, from all four prominent Sufi silsilahs (spiritual orders): Qadriya, Naqsbandiya, Chistiya, and Saharwardiya. Additionally, he has received recognition from the Firdosi silsilah, underscoring his deep commitment to spiritual growth and religious teachings.
Balancing Taalim, Tabligh, and Tazkiyah
Central to Haji Shakeel Ahmad’s philosophy is the belief in maintaining a delicate balance between Taalim (education), Tabligh (preaching), and Tazkiyah (spiritual purification), principles that align with the mission of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Throughout his journey, Shakeel Ahmad has strived to impart knowledge, spread the message of Islam, and guide individuals towards spiritual enlightenment.
