Miles2Smile, a non-profit organisation that works for the relief and rehabilitation of distressed individuals and educational upliftment of the marginalised and underprivileged, has started a fundraising campaign to help the families whose houses and properties were razed in Khargone, Karoli and Jahangirpuri following the communal violence.
The organisation has so far raised 50 lakhs and has now set up a target of one crore amount through the crowdfunding platform, Ketto.
Aasif Mujtaba, the founder of Miles2Smile said they are reaching out to donors through social media besides their team of 15 members working to yield more funds through various forms.
He said the organisation collected 50 lakhs earlier and added that it had reached the victims. There are 157 victims in total, and Aasif says, adding the loss may exceed more than twenty lakhs to a few of them.
“We deposited the money into their bank accounts, through which they may compensate with what they lost”, Aasif said.
The organisation had also identified the victims who required significant help and gave them the aid.
“In Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, we gave five lakhs to a bakery owner who had lost everything. It would take a minimum of twenty lakh to rebuild his business, but since we had fifty lakhs in hand, we could give him this much. Once we get the amount we are looking for, we will give him more,” he said.
The organisation also deposited five lakh to another victim in Baroli who had lost his business. For many of the victims, their shops were their only means of earning a living, and most of the families had a sole breadwinner.
At the time of filing this report, over Rs 45 lakhs was already raised on Ketto in less than a day.
