Continuing its frenzy of giving Muslim-sounding cities Hindu names, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is now planning to change the name of Sultanpur to Kush Bhawanpur, a report said on Friday. Kush is the name of the son of the Hindu deity Ram.
News agency IANS reported that it has been confirmed by a senior official at the Board of Revenue that a proposal to this effect has been sent to the Uttar Pradesh government, which will get it approved by the state cabinet.
BJP MLA Devmani Dwivedi, who represents Lambhua (Sultanpur), had raised the issue in the Assembly in 2018.
If the proposal is accepted, Sultanpur will be the third district to be renamed by the Yogi Adityanath government after Faizabad that was named Ayodhya and Allahabad which became Prayagraj.
Academics such as Delhi University Professor Apoorvanand has written in the past that the reason for renaming places is BJP’s attempt to obliterate India’s Muslim history and wants to send a message that Muslims have made no contribution to India’s cultural life.
The Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency is represented by former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi.
