Fouziyya Hassan, one of the two Maldivian women falsely implicated in the ISRO spy case along with scientist Nambi Narayanan, passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Sri Lanka. She was 79.
A well-known actress in the Maldives, Hassan passed away after being admitted to the hospital with chest trouble, news website sun.mv reported.
Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid condoled the demise of Hassan.
“It is with deep sadness that we hear the news of the passing away of Fouziyya Hassan, who has made a tremendous contribution to the broadcasting, arts and film industry. May God grant the family patience and may God grant the deceased Paradise. Amen!,” Shahid, who is also president of the United Nations General Assembly, tweeted.
In 1994, Hassan was held in Kerala together with Mariam Rasheeda, another Maldivian woman, and scientist Nambi Narayanan on suspicion of transferring secret information about India’s space programme to foreign nations.
Hassan said she first saw Nambi Narayanan in CBI custody and alleged that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Kerala police had forced her to name Nambi.
