Former Member of Parliament noted Congress leader, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Court, and Executive Council member, Wasim Ahmad passed away at 69 after a cardiac arrest on Sunday in Aligarh.
Teachers at Aligarh Muslim University expressed condolences on his sad demise.
Tariq Mansoor, Vice-Chancellor at AMU said, “He was our alumnus and it is a matter of grief for us. More than this, he is a personal loss to me.”
“My prayers and condolences to the family,” he said.
Born on 1st March 1952, Wasim Ahmad was elected as the Secretary of AMU Students’ Union in 1979. He actively participated in the movement for the restoration of the minority character of AMU from 1971 to 1981.
He held the position of All India Secretary of Janata Dal from 1990 to 1994, and All India General Secretary of Janata Dal from 1994 to 1996. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh for a short while from November 1996 to July 1998.
After the fall of IK Gujral’s United Front government in 1998, he along with Jaipal Reddy and other Janata Dal leaders joined the Congress Party.
He was acquainted with leaders like Piloo Mody, H N Bahuguna, Arif Mohammed Khan during his Janata Party days, and Janata Dal was formed in 1988 he got associated with VP Singh.
