Renowned Islamic scholar and former principal and rector of Jamia Darussalam Oomerabad, Shaikh Hafeez-Ur-Rahman Azmi Umri Madani passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2022, in Chennai. He was 81.
Maulana Hafeez-Ur-Rahman was born on April 6 1941 in Oomerabad in Tamil Nadu. His father was Sheikh al-Hadith Maulana Nouman Azmi Umari, also a well-known Islamic scholar. After completing his primary education, he joined the Arabic section of the Jamia Darussalam in 1953. He later studied at the Islamic University of Madinah.
In 1966 he joined Jamia Darussalam as a teacher. He served as a preacher in Nigeria between 1976 to 1978 and in Malaysia from 1982 to 1986.
He was well versed in the Islamic disciplines of Tafseer, Usul al-Hadith, Usul al-Fiqh and Arabic literature and had a large following in these fields. He also wrote numerous books, translated major works into Urdu from Arabic and contributed to various magazines.
