All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal has refuted the allegations against him and said that the viral video of him calling to form an ‘Islamic state’ is morphed and made to malign his image.
A video went viral on social media in which Ajmal allegedly claims that he would make Assam an ‘Islamic nation’ if elected to power.
The doctored video was circulated by rightwing extremists on social media with many calling for his arrest.
After the video became the centre of controversy, it was fact-checked by different fact-checking websites and outlets including Alt News. The websites reported that in the video, Ajmal is seen telling the audience, “the Mughals ruled India for 800 years but never thought of making the country an Islamic State and the British who ruled India for 200 years also never tried to make India a Christian State. He is further heard saying that the Congress party has ruled India for 55 out of the 70 years post-Independence but it never attempted to make the country a Hindu State.”
“Narendra Modi should also not dream of converting India into a Hindu Rashtra,” he further adds.
According to Ajmal, the video was doctored and deliberately propagated with a motive to demonize his image and divert the audience in support of the BJP.
“They (opposition) don’t have anything to offer to the public hence they are attempting to break the Congress-AIUDF alliance through malice. Our grand alliance will win enough seats to form the next government,” Ajmal said in a press conference.
The video was shared by Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), a right-leaning legal outfit.
In the press conference, Ajmal said he will take legal action against the propagators for running misinformation and peddling lies against him and his party’s reputation.
