Cycle Mechanic Turned Social Worker Mohammad Shareef Receives Padma Shri Award

Mohammad Shareef, a cycle mechanic turned social worker from Ayodhya received the Padma Shri award, the fourth-highest civilian honour of the country on Monday for his selfless work of performing last rites of unclaimed dead bodies.

“President Kovind presents Padma Shri to Shri Mohammad Shareef for Social Work. He is a cycle mechanic turned social worker. He performs the last rites of unclaimed dead bodies of all religions with full dignity,” tweeted Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The 83-year-old started performing the last rites of the unidentified bodies after his eldest son was murdered in 1992 and his unclaimed body was lying on the road and was later devoured by stray animals.
