A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to help the family of Idris Pasha, a Muslim man who was brutally beaten to death by self-styled cow vigilantes in Karnataka. The incident took place on April 1st, when Idris was transporting cattle and was intercepted by the accused, Puneet Kerehalli and his accomplices.
Idris Pasha’s body was later found along a road at the Sathnur Village in Ramanagara district of Karnataka. The Karnataka Police have arrested Puneeth Kerehalli and four others in connection with the murder. Kerehalli was arrested in Rajasthan’s Banswara district, where he had fled after the incident.
As per the First Information Report (FIR), Pasha’s vehicle carrying cattle was intercepted by cow vigilantes in Sathanur village, in the wee hours of Friday night, 31 March. The cow vigilantes accused Pasha of illegally transporting cattle for slaughter. Though Pasha said that the cattle were bought from a local market and that he had documents for the same, he was abused by the vigilantes and told to go to Pakistan. He was later chased and assaulted resulting in severe injuries.
Shamsuddin, a 55-year-old tractor mechanic and Pasha’s uncle, told media, “I, along with the rest of the family, saw his body. Electric shocks were given on his arms, on his neck. They hit his jaw with a bat, his head was also damaged. We got his body after post mortem for burial. When we were trying to clean the body with water, his skin was coming off.”
Pasha leaves behind his wife and children, who are now forced to navigate the difficult road ahead without him. The youngest member of the family is just a tender 3-month-old baby, who will grow up without the loving presence of his father.
In the wake of this tragedy, a crowdfunding campaign has been started on the Milaap platform to financially support Idris’s family. The campaign aims to raise Rs.50,00,000, and at the time of writing, over Rs.50,00,00 has already been raised. This is a heartening gesture of solidarity from people across the country who are standing with Idris’s family in their hour of need.
