Calcutta University To Now Admit Students From AMU School Board, After Denying Admissions

Calcutta University has recognized the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) board for all its courses after A.M. Sajid ul Haque Laskar, a student of Aligarh Muslim University was restricted from filling an application form to get admission on the premise that the AMU Board is not enlisted as recognized in their list of recognized school boards.

Laskar, who passed his Class XII exams from the Saiyyid Hamid Senior Secondary School in Aligarh this year, had tried to apply for B.Com courses at Maulana Azad College and Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration. But his application did not go through because the AMU Board was not on the list.

As per Calcutta University, 31 boards are eligible to get admission in its UG courses. However, AMU Board and Jamia Board are not on that list.

The AMU board is listed by the Council of Boards for School Education (COBSE). As per them, Aligarh Muslim University Board of Secondary and Sr. Secondary Education is enlisted as a member of Boards, at number 8. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test also recognises AMU board scores.

Dr Syed Mohd Mustafa, Principal of Sayyid Hamid Senior Secondary School (Boys) said, “the school is maintained institution of Aligarh Muslim University, established in the year 1987 under section 12 of AMU Act, 1920. COBSE which is responsible for verifying genuineness and recognition of school education boards of India has recognized AMU has granted membership to the AMU board as one of the recognized boards and therefore it should be followed by the National Curriculum Framework throughout the country. National Testing Agency which conducts NEET JE and other examinations have also recognized the AMU Board. AMU board has relevance and equivalence as other member boards of the country”.

But the AMU Board was not on the UP government’s list. A TOI report quoted a UP secondary board senior official who said that the AMU board had been a recognised one in the state till 2014 but was dropped for reasons they were not aware of. They are “in the process” of revising it, he was quoted as saying.

On Laskar’s approach, AMU immediately sent the letter to Calcutta University concerning the matter and sent the required documents to make an update and necessary change in their list of recognized boards and add AMU as one of them so their students don’t have to face such difficulties in future.

The AMU Board has now been added to Calcutta University’s list of recognized Boards and students can apply for their UG and PG courses.
