Author Who Made “Derogatory” Remarks Against Islam Arrested In Tumkur After Uproar

A week after an online uproar against one Prof. Ramchandraiah over abusive and derogatory remarks against Islam and Muslims in his book that is being taught in B.Ed courses across universities, the author has been arrested by the Tumkuru Police.

A complaint was filed against him at New Extension Police Station by Campus Front of India State Vice President Roshan Nawaz. Complaints were also filed against the professor in 25 police stations across the state.

He was arrested by New Extension Police Station personnel in Tumkuru and booked under 153(A), 295 (A) and other sections.

“We filed the complaint because he had abused the name of Prophet Muhammad and made derogatory and false claims about Islam and Muslims in order portray them in a negative light,” Roshan Nawaz told The Cognate.

The row erupted after a picture of a page surfaced on social media with some users claiming that it carried objectionable content against Islam and Muslims.

The book is said to be taught in B.Ed courses of several universities including Mangalore University. The book allegedly claimed that Islam wants jihad and war while the public wants peace, harmony and kindness.

The contents are allegedly offensive as it defames the Holy Quran and says Muslims are “indoctrinated with false information and false belief”.

People who expressed their anger at the content said that the book is being taught to budding teachers who will pass on the same mindset to young students in schools.

Educationist Niranjanaradhya VP said the content was “highly objectionable” where the author was targeting a particular section of the society with an ulterior motive.

“Parochialism is in all sections and religions and that need to be addressed as a whole but not with the intention of only pointing to a particular section with a hidden agenda,” Niranjanaradhya told Vartha Bharati.

Popular Front of India also condemned the objectionable content as it blamed the BJP government for “manipulating the education system by including Islamophobic content in the syllabus”.
