All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly making “objectionable” remarks about the condition of quarantine facilities and hospitals treating COVID 19 patients in the state, calling them worse than detention centres.
The AIUDF legislator from Dhing constituency was apprehended early in the morning after preliminary interrogation, PTI reported.
A purported audio clip of Aminul Islam’s conversation with another person was shared on social media, where he allegedly said that the living conditions in Assam’s coronavirus quarantine centres were worse than those at the detention centres. Hundreds of suspected undocumented migrants and so-called “doubtful citizens”, many of them Muslims, are lodged in the detention centres in Assam.
“We have registered a case against him under various sections of the IPC for criminal conspiracy, spreading disaffection between communities, among others,” PTI quoted state police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta as saying.
The MLA also accused the Assam government of conspiring against the Muslims, NorthEast Now reported. He also alleged that the hospital staff at the quarantine centres were harassing those who returned after attending the Tablighi Jamaat conference held in Nizamuddin area of Delhi last month.
