Assam Elections: 31 Muslim MLAs Elected To New Assembly

The newly-elected 126-member Assam Assembly will have a total of 31 Muslim MLAs, of which 16 were fielded by the Congress and 15 by the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF.)

The two parties won 29 and 16 seats, both improving upon their 2016 performance by three seats each. While 15 of the AIUDF candidates are Muslims, the 16th candidate is Phanidhar Talukdar who has won from the Bhabanipur constituency.

The BJP had fielded eight minority Muslim candidates in the assembly polls, including Aminul Haque Laskar, but all of them lost.

Laskar was the lone Muslim face of the saffron party among their 86 elected representatives in 2016 and even went on to become the Deputy Speaker in the 126-member Assembly. He lost his Sonai seat to Karim Uddin Barbhuiya of the AIUDF by a margin of 19,654 votes.
