Another attempt to force change the name of the Taj Mahal to “Tejo Mahalaya” failed on Wednesday in a special session of the Agra Municipal Corporation after the house was adjourned indefinitely amidst sloganeering.
Shoba Ram Rathore, a BJP corporator had moved a resolution demanding the name change, over an amplified unhistorical claim that the Taj is a Hindu temple.
While the BJP was adamant to move the resolution, the BSP and Congress corporators opposed the initiative, claiming that the High Court and the Supreme Court, had already dismissed the plea.
The Taj Mahal is a protected monument under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India, a Central Government body run by the Ministry of Culture, and has denied accepting the theory of the Taj Mahal being a temple, as propagated by Hindutva groups.
In May this year, the Allahabad High Court dismissed a plea seeking a ”fact-finding inquiry” into the history of the Taj Mahal and the “opening of 22 rooms” of the monument. Reprimanding the petitioner, a BJP worker, the bench had asked him not to make a mockery of the public interest litigation system.
